Our research is an outgrowth of our third-generation family farming operation located in Oxford County, Ontario.

We wanted to develop a better understanding of plant nutrition, allowing us to create fertility programs that would efficiently and economically feed our crop. We also wanted to share our findings with our customers and other farmers across Ontario.

So, we began conducting formal research trials in 2011. We combine the best elements of traditional small plot research with those of on-farm trials. Each of our field-sized trials includes a minimum of three randomized replications, as well as a check treatment.

Altogether, our trials span about 100 acres. We focus our research on corn, soybeans and edible beans. We have also done some work with winter wheat.

As farmers, we realize that the response of a crop to a fertilizer program can change based on weather conditions and soil types. So, we conduct our key trials for multiple years to see if the fertilizer programs provide consistent results. This longer timeframe also enables us to rotate the trial to different soil types, as the farms in our cash crop operation range from clay-loam to sand.

Morning Glory Research Station is truly a family endeavor. John Gal brings over three decades of farming experience and is a Certified Crop Advisor (CCA-ON). Andrea M. Gal, who holds a PhD in agricultural history, has a strong sense of trending topics and concerns in the industry. Jessica Gal has her Master of Science in Plant Agriculture from the University of Guelph, is a CCA-ON, and is experienced in conducting research trials.

We use the knowledge we’ve gained from our field trials to shape the fertilizer programs we follow in our cash crop and custom work operations.
